The very name Hangzhou evokes a sense of poetic romance, a city painted in the brushstrokes of ancient poets and emperors. For centuries, it has been lauded as one of China's most beautiful cities, a place where serene nature and profound culture intertwine seamlessly. Marco Polo supposedly described it as "the finest and most splendid city in the world." While the city has modernized, its soul remains firmly rooted in the misty waters of its legendary West Lake and the lush green hills that embrace it. This five-day itinerary is designed to guide you through the very best of Hangzhou, balancing iconic sights with hidden gems, bustling markets with tranquil temples, ensuring you experience the city's timeless magic.
Your journey into Hangzhou's soul begins, as it must, at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, West Lake (Xi Hu). Don't just see it; experience it. The lake is not a single attraction but a vast, living landscape garden, best explored slowly and thoughtfully.
Start your day early at Lingyin Temple (Temple of the Soul's Retreat), located just west of the lake. Arriving before the major tour groups allows you to appreciate the serenity of this active Buddhist monastery. Your first stop is the Feilai Feng (Peak Flown From Afar), a limestone hill pocked with hundreds of ancient carvings of Buddhas and bodhisattvas etched into the rock face over centuries. Then, proceed to the main temple halls, a complex of magnificent buildings housing a breathtaking 24-meter-tall camphor-wood statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The sense of history and devotion here is palpable.
After the temple, make your way to the northeastern shore of West Lake. Begin a walk along the Bai Causeway, which connects the lakeshore to Gushan Island. The view of the lake framed by willow trees and distant hills is the quintessential Hangzhou image. Take a short taxi or bus ride to the Meijiawu Tea Plantation or the Longjing Village (Longjing Cun) area. These terraced hills are the heartland of Longjing Tea (Dragon Well Tea), one of China's most celebrated green teas. Walking through the neat rows of tea bushes is a sensory delight. Many local farming families open their homes to visitors for a tea-tasting experience. You'll learn how to properly brew and appreciate Longjing tea, and of course, have the opportunity to purchase some directly from the source. The freshness and subtle, nutty flavor here are unparalleled.
From the tea fields, find your way to the start of the Path of Lingering Steps (Feilai Feng trail area) or the trail leading to Shang Tian Zhu (Upper Tianzhu). This is a relatively gentle hike through a deeply forested valley, dotted with serene temples, trickling streams, and ancient trees. The air is fresh and filled with the sound of birds and chanting from the temples. Visit the Fajing Temple and Faxi Temple along the way, which are often quieter and more intimate than the major tourist spots, offering a moment of genuine tranquility.
After a day in nature, experience one of Hangzhou's most spectacular modern performances: The Romance of the Song Dynasty at the Songcheng Park. This is a massive, Broadway-style show that brings the history and culture of the Southern Song Dynasty, when Hangzhou was the capital, to life with stunning acrobatics, flying actors, and elaborate costumes. The entire theme park is designed to resemble an ancient city, making for a fun and immersive evening.
Hangzhou's wealth historically came from its position at the southern terminus of the Grand Canal and its thriving silk industry. Today is dedicated to exploring these foundational pillars.
While the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is over a thousand miles long, you can explore its most picturesque section right in the city. Head to the Gongchen Bridge area, a historic landmark. The old warehouses and traditional buildings along the canal banks have been restored, creating a charming historical district. Take a public canal boat tour from here. Gliding along this ancient waterway, watching life on the banks and passing under stone bridges, is a journey back in time. Get off at the Xiaohe Direct Street (Xiaohe Zhi Jie) area, a beautifully preserved old street with cafes, shops, and small museums.
Hangzhou silk has been prized for millennia. To understand its significance, visit the China National Silk Museum. Spend your evening at Hefang Street (Hefang Jie), a restored Song Dynasty-style pedestrian street. While touristy, it's energetic and full of life. Browse for souvenirs, watch street performers, and sample a variety of local snacks. For dinner, you can choose from one of the many restaurants or simply graze on street food. Don't miss trying a Beggar's Chicken (Jiao Hua Ji), a whole chicken stuffed and baked in a clay shell. Afterwards, climb up the Chenghuang Pavilion (City God Pavilion) for a fantastic night view over the old street and the city.
Your fourth day is about capturing the best views of the city and delving deeper into its artistic heritage.
Head to the south side of West Lake to ascend the Leifeng Pagoda. The original pagoda collapsed in 1924, but the current structure is a modern reconstruction built over the ancient foundations, complete with elevators and escalators. While some purists dislike its modernity, the panoramic views of West Lake from the top are absolutely unbeatable and provide the perfect geographical context for your entire trip.
A short walk from Leifeng Pagoda is the Hangzhou Museum, which offers a comprehensive look at the city's evolution. Alternatively, for art lovers, the China Academy of Art's Art Museum nearby features excellent and often avant-garde exhibitions. For a more niche experience, seek out the Hu Xueyan Former Residence, the extravagant and beautifully preserved mansion of a legendary Qing Dynasty merchant. Its exquisite gardens and architecture showcase the pinnacle of traditional Chinese residential design.
Your final evening by the lake should be marked by a world-class performance. Impression West Lake, directed by the renowned Zhang Yimou, is a stunning open-air show performed on the water itself at the Yue Lake area. The lake is the stage, with dancers gliding across the surface, lights transforming the landscape, and a narrative drawn from a classic local legend. It's a mesmerizing and unforgettable sensory experience that perfectly encapsulates the beauty and romance of Hangzhou.
On your final day, escape the city center to experience a different kind of natural beauty before taking care of any last-minute wishes.
Take a trip to the Xixi National Wetland Park, located on the western outskirts of the city. This is a vast area of waterways, ponds, reed beds, and woodlands, often called the "kidneys of Hangzhou." Explore the park by taking a relaxing boat ride through its quiet canals, spotting wildlife, and walking along the paths. It's a peaceful and green contrast to the cultural sites of the previous days and showcases the city's commitment to ecological preservation.
If you haven't had your fill of shopping, this is your chance. For a more modern shopping experience, head to the Wulin Square area with its large department stores. For silk products, the Hangzhou Silk City is a massive market dedicated entirely to silk, from raw fabric to finished garments, scarves, and bedding. It's the perfect place to pick up high-quality, authentic gifts.
